.....The Middletown settlers were very sharply divided. Even the boys at school became bitter partisans. It is handed down by tradition that a quarrel occurred between two of the schoolboys, one Isaac Dumond a son of Peter, and the other a boy by the name of Markle. The latter called Dumond a rebel and in return Dumond struck him. An encounter ensued; and probably other boys took sides. The matter ended in the breaking up of the school.

RESIDENCE: All the brothers and sisters of Ignatius Dumond left Delaware County in 1789 and went west through forests, rivers and streams and made a settlement in what is now Ithacca, Tompkins County, New York.
RESIDENCE: Jacob Yaple, his wife and 3 children, John Yaple his brother, Isaac Dumond, wife and three children and brother John, and Peter Hinepaw, his wife and 5 children moved to Ithaca, New York in 1789. Through a land agents

carelessness or crime, they located in 1790 in Danby, now Tompkins County, New York.

Kingston i April 1788, with two Delaware Indians for guides; also the return in April of the following year of three of their number, Jacob Yaple, Isaac Dumond, and Peter Hinepaw, who made the first settlement in the town, on a four hundred acre lot. These pioneers planted corn on the Indian clearings, left their crops with John Yaple, a younger brother of Jacob, and returned to Kingston for their families. They came back to theri new homes in September, bringing a few farming tools, a little household furniture, and a number of horses, cattle, sheep, and hogs.

The three families numbered twenty persons: Jacob Yaple, his wife and three children (Philip, Mary and Peter and John Yaple, the brother, who was then 24 years of age); Isaac Dumond, his wife and three children (Peter, Abram

and Jenny), and John Dumond and his wife, then lately married; Peter Hinepaw, his wife and children (whose names we cannot give, the eldest of whom was about twelve years of age).

The families of Yaples, Dumond, and Hinepaw lost the land they hand located here (in Ithaca), through nonpayment of taxes at Albany by their agent, and the first two removed in 1795 to the northern part of Danby, while Hinepaw

located near the site of Aurora.
