CLINICAL SENIOR LECTURER/HONORARY CONSULTANT IN

NEUROSURGERY (NEURO-ONCOLOGY)

SUMMARY


Applications are invited for the above post, tenable at the Institute of Neurology in partnership with the Cancer Institute, UCL, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH NHS Foundation Trust. This post forms a part of the Samantha Dickson Brain Cancer Unit recently established at UCL recognising the importance of neuro-oncology as an area of research and clinical activity at the UCL Cancer Institute, Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN).

Within the NHNN, the Neuro-Oncology Group provides a multidisciplinary clinical service for patients with brain cancer. The medical staff of the group consists of: 3 Consultant Neurosurgeons with sub-specialisms, 1 neurologist, together with 3 radiation and medical oncologists as core members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). The service is Trust and community-wide within the North London Cancer Network. A new Brain Cancer Treatment Unit will be opened in 2010. The post holder will be involved in the provision of this clinical service.

The Head of the Division of Neurosurgery within the Institute of Neurology is Mr Neil Kitchen. Academic Neurosurgery at the Institute is collaborative with allied specialisms, particularly neurology, neuropathology and neuro-imaging. There are major research programmes within the neurosurgical areas of Functional Neurosurgery, Epilepsy and Spinal Cord Repair.

This post’s contract is for 10PAs being 50% NHS and 50% academic research, the latter being funded through the generosity of the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, and is funded for 5 years in the first instance.

        1. DUTIES OF POST HOLDER


Research



The post holder will be expected to develop a research programme in the field of neuro-oncology under Professor Chris Boshoff in the UCL Cancer Institute and Professor Alan Thompson, Director UCL, Institute of Neurology. The post holder will be expected to have an exciting and innovative five-year programme of research, building on his/her previous work. This programme has the potential to be funded by the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, subject to satisfactory peer-review.

The research proposal should be appended to the application.



Teaching



The post holder will assist with the supervision and teaching of BSc, MSc, MPhil/PhD students, and medical students within the NHNN Victor Horsley Department of Neurosurgery, as requested and contribute to postgraduate and undergraduate neuroscience teaching at the Institute of Neurology, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and UCL Medical School. In particular, the post holder will be expected to assist in the organisation of and participate directly in the neurosurgery teaching programme for neurosurgery trainees.

Clinical



The post holder will have an Honorary Consultant Contract with the UCLH NHS Foundation Trust. The post will carry 3.5 fixed clinical Programmed Activities with inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. The post holder will be expected to run one outpatient clinic per week (alternate general neurosurgery and neuro-oncology) as well as participating in joint clinics and MDT meetings, and be responsible for the care of the inpatients admitted under his/her care. The post holder will also share in the clinical general neurosurgery on-call consultant rota at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, 50% pro-rata. There will be one full day operating list per week as a routine with ad hoc access to others as availability and need permits.

Management



The post holder will be involved in the administration of both the clinical service and the research group, and will from time to time be involved in selection, recruitment and appraisal of staff. S/he will keep updated on recruitment and research governance issues consistent with the University and Trust policies.

Administrative

Support



Dedicated desk space in the Samantha Dickson Brain Cancer Unit at the UCL Cancer Institute and office space and appropriate clinical secretarial support in the NHNN Victor Horsley Department will be provided for the Senior Lecturer.
